How to Use This Calculator
This page has three independent percentage calculators. Mode A answers "what is X% of Y?" — enter a percentage and a total to find the result. Mode B answers "X is what percent of Y?" — enter a part and a total to find the percentage. Mode C calculates the percentage change between two values — enter a starting value and an ending value. Each calculator works independently and does not affect the others.
Percentage Formulas
Mode A — Percentage of a value: Result = Total × Percentage ÷ 100. Example: 20% of 50 = 50 × 20 ÷ 100 = 10.
Mode B — What percent is X of Y: Result = (Part ÷ Total) × 100. Example: 30 ÷ 150 × 100 = 20%. The total must not be zero.
Mode C — Percentage change: Result = ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100. A positive result is an increase; a negative result is a decrease. The starting value must not be zero.
Example Calculations
Suppose you want to leave an 18% tip on a $65 restaurant bill. Using Mode A: 18% of $65 = $65 × 18 ÷ 100 = $11.70. If your investment portfolio grew from $10,000 to $11,500, use Mode C: (11,500 − 10,000) ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 15% increase. If 45 out of 180 employees work remotely, Mode B tells you: 45 ÷ 180 × 100 = 25%.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a percentage?
To find what X% of Y is, multiply Y by X and divide by 100. For example, 20% of 50 = 50 × 20 ÷ 100 = 10. Use Mode A above to calculate this instantly.
How do I find what percent one number is of another?
Divide the part by the total and multiply by 100. For example, 30 is what percent of 150? 30 ÷ 150 × 100 = 20%. Use Mode B above for this calculation.
How do I calculate percentage increase or decrease?
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, and multiply by 100. Formula: (New − Old) ÷ Old × 100. A positive result means an increase; a negative result means a decrease. Use Mode C above.
What is percentage change?
Percentage change measures how much a value has grown or shrunk relative to its starting point. It's expressed as a percent — for example, a price rising from $100 to $125 is a 25% increase. A drop from $200 to $150 is a −25% decrease. Percentage change is different from percentage points.
How do percentages work in finance?
Percentages are used throughout finance to express rates of return, interest rates, tax rates, discounts, and more. For example, an investment returning 8% annually means your money grows by 8 cents for every dollar invested each year. Understanding percentage calculations is essential for comparing loans, evaluating investments, and tracking budget changes.
